About edge recording

2017-06-08Last updated

Edge recording is the process of recording and storing recorded videos on the peripheral device, thus removing the need for a centralized recording server or unit. With edge recording, you can store video directly on the camera’s internal storage device (SD card) or on a network attached storage volume (NAS volume).

How it works

A video surveillance system that uses a physical or cloud-based server to record video requires extensive bandwidth. Whether video is recorded continuously or only when motion is detected, video is streamed from each video unit to the server continuously.

When recording video with an edge recording video unit or NAS volume, extensive bandwidth is not required in the Camera continuous or NAS continuous recording type, because video recordings are not sent over a WAN (Wide Area Network) or Internet connection—they are stored on the video unit (SD card) or NAS volume.
Note: A secure internet connection with the appropriate bandwidth is required to view live video and stream playback video on demand.
Edge recording is configured when the following occurs:
  • You add a video unit that supports edge recording
  • You choose the Camera continuous recording type
  • You choose the NAS continuous recording type
Note: The Camera continuous recording type will only be available if an SD card has already been inserted in the camera.

A 64GB SD card can typically store more than a month of video.

Benefits of edge recording

The following are some of the benefits of edge recording:
  • Requires less network bandwidth and reduces network congestion.

With the Camera continuous recording type extensive bandwidth is not required. The network is only used for streaming live and playback video, and exporting video, not for storing video recordings.

  • Decreases the risk of missing video recordings.

If the SmartOffice™ cloud is offline, edge recording is unaffected and recording continues on the video unit (SD card) or NAS volume.

Limitations

Accessing playback video that is stored on the video unit or network attached storage (NAS) is slower than accessing video that is stored in the SmartOffice™ cloud.
